ALEX KOH brings an iconic Singapore drink to another level with Sugarkoh
OH YES! EVEN WITH CREAM...
Sugarcane juice is an iconic Singapore drink, conjuring up visions of delicious Singapore food, bustling stalls and beating the tropical heat. Pass through sugarcane stalks through a crusher with a satisfying crunch and you get a light green, frothy drink that is naturally sweet and very pretty.
Alex Koh, founder of Sugarkoh, takes sugarcane to another level by creating sugarcane slush and a slew of add-ons and combinations. You can create your own concept sugarcane slush by adding fruit purees such as guava, pomelo, passionfruit etc, and add toppings from whipped cream to pomelo bits to bobas and more.
Want something soothing for your tummy after all that food – try sugarcane slush with ginger. Want a hint of tang? Try it with lemon. There are no additives or added sugar so it retains the natural treasure of what sugarcane is.
A CHAT WITH ALEX KOH, FOUNDER OF SUGARKOH
1 What gave you the brilliant idea of turning sugarcane into slush?
I was selling sugarcane juice pre-Covid and always wanted to take this local drink to a higher level. During the pandemic, my creativity kicked in and I came up with the idea. Plus, I grew up in the slushy era, so this mash up seemed like a match made in heaven. Who wouldn’t love a refreshing, -2 degrees, all natural sugarcane slush in sunny Singapore?!
2 Where do you get your sugarcane from? And, in your opinion, what country produces really good sugarcane?
I source my sugarcane from Malaysia. I am very happy with the current quality of the sugarcane, so it has to be Malaysia.
3 What are your 3 favourite Singapore foods that go with Sugarkoh sugarcane slush?
Mala hotpot, BBQ chicken wings and stingray
